Echocardiogram requests prioritization

The Challenge

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is leading an initiative to modernize and optimize echocardiogram scheduling across its network. This project targets a critical bottleneck in Quebec’s healthcare system: a growing backlog of echocardiogram requests that has left more than 3,500 patients waiting over a year for essential cardiac imaging. The MUHC will deploy a four-component AI solution to automate triage, personalize appointment durations, predict no-shows and prioritize exams based on clinical urgency. Together, these tools will reduce unnecessary imaging, improve resource use and accelerate diagnoses.

“Improving access to cardiac imaging is essential to delivering timely, equitable care for our patients. By applying artificial intelligence to optimize scheduling and resource management, we are taking a decisive step toward a more responsive, efficient and patient-centred healthcare system.”
