Empowering Journalism with Generative AI

The Challenge

Much of Canada’s local news goes underreported due to resource constraints. The Globe and Mail, in collaboration with Beam Data, is launching an AI-driven initiative intending to enhance civic journalism and provide readers with faster access to trusted content. The project introduces two core innovations: GenAI Reporting Assistant, a newsroom tool that streamlines research and automates monitoring of emerging local stories, and MyGlobe News Agent, a GenAI-powered Search feature that helps discover accurate, on-demand content recommendations sourced from The Globe’s trusted journalism. This solution aims to improve newsroom efficiency, broaden local coverage, and respond directly to reader demands for relevant news experiences—all while maintaining the editorial rigour The Globe and Mail is known for.

“By integrating GenAI into both our newsroom and reader experience, we are expecting to expand our ability to report on civic issues across Canada and delivering more relevant, accessible, and high-quality journalism to every reader, wherever they live.”
